The Institute of Bioengineering is a cross-faculty initiative, involving academics from both Science & Engineering and Medicine & Dentistry supported by industrial and clinical partnerships, including Barts Health NHS Trust. The Institute has flourished since its inception in 2014.

Professor Liz Tanner is Fellow Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng), Royal Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE), Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (FIMechE), Fellow of the Institute of Materials Minerals and Mining (FIMMM), Fellow of the Institution of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), Chartered Engineer (CEng), Chartered Scientist (CSci).

Manoj provides clinical leadership, innovation experience, and a critical patient-leading perspective. His work focuses on developing strategies for musculoskeletal regeneration, medical devices, and digital medicine.

Dr Stellios Arseniyadis

Dr Stellios Arseniyadis

Stellios is working in the development of new synthetic methods to attain high structural and functional complexity. He accepted a Reader position at Queen Mary University of London where his research group is interested in the development of synthetic tools and their application in natural product synthesis.

Department School of Engineering and Materials Science

Helena brings solid international experience in bioengineering and developing large-scale initiatives. Her work focuses on self-assembling hyaluronan-peptide biomaterials for drug delivery, regenerative medicine, and biosensing.

Prof Fran Balkwill

Prof Fran Balkwill
Department Barts Cancer Institute

Fran provides scientific and public engagement leadership, research guidance, and a world-leading track-record in medical research. Her work focuses on understanding and developing 3D cancer models and biomimetic environments, and on the links between cancer and inflammation.

Prof Alan Drew

Prof Alan Drew
Department School of Physics and Astronomy

Alan is Director of the Material Research Institute and in 2018 was promoted to Professor. His main interests are understanding spin and charge carrier dynamics in organic and biological materials, the properties of materials with novel quantum mechanical states, structure function relationships in biomass derived conductors.
