Wen studied Fluid Mechanics at University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) before his PhD in Vascular Bioengineering at Imperial College London. Following his postdoctoral research in Chemical Engineering at UMIST (now University of Manchester) and his Wellcome Trust Fellowship in the Medical School of Imperial College London, he joined Queen Mary University of London in 1999 as a Senior Lecturer and one of the founding members of the biomedical engineering programme. He had his Readership in 2001 and his Professorship in Biomedical Engineering in 2003. Supported by a Royal Academy of Engineering Global Research Award, he had his sabbatical leave at Harvard and then stayed at MIT to work on a NIH international project. He was the Academic Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Mathematical Science 2009-10; Dean for Research of the Faculty of Science and Engineering between 2010 and 2016; Faculty Dean for International and Head of School of the School of Engineering and Materials Science in 2016 before being made Vice-Principal for Science and Engineering in July 2018.
